Origin Story

Book Clubs

other heroic acts of ex-English majors

Chicks w/ Dictionaries was conceived, as can happen, around midnight in the backseat of a car just outside a closed Barnes and Noble.

The local faux-English college bar

Book Club (capital B capital C), however, found its illustrious origins six months earlier in the cramped booth of a smoky, faux-English college bar one fateful Tuesday evening--karaoke night. As the three waited to "support" a mutual friend, the conversation inevitably turned to the topic of books (that is, after Jan and Ann wrapped up a heated yet invigorating shouting match about Buffy).

The details discussed then are long forgotten, but the fruit of that meeting was a series of weekly gatherings in which books, films, and food were shared. A new book would have to be read and discussed every 2 weeks, classics or "trash" being chosen alternately.

And so Book Club proceeded for several profitable weeks until that infamous midnight outside Barnes and Noble when the three found they would not be satisfied until the whole of their brilliant project could be preserved for posterity. A blog, it was to be, a blog with a clever if not perfect name.

"Sense and Sexuality!" offered Diane, always bent on Austen. After that, the floodgates opened to a brainstorm of "Pride and Pubic Hair," "Crime and Cunnilingus," any thing with a "Dickens" in it, or even simply "Hard Times." "That's What She Read" was already taken, sadly.

This sort of masturbatory punning continued for some days with "Premature Articulation" close in the running, and after some outside consultation, a settlement was reached and the blog was born.
